Przegląd Statystyczny. Statistical Review (PS) is one of the oldest Polish scientific journals devoted to statistics and econometrics. The journal, first titled Przegląd Statystyczny, was founded in 1937 by the Polish Statistical Association and thus has a long-standing tradition in the Polish statistical literature. Its establishment was associated with the development of statistics in Poland and with the activities of the Polish Statistical Association, whose aim was to promote statistical research and the results of scientific studies within national and international scientific communities.
In 1937, the editorial committee of Przegląd Statystyczny was established, and the journal became the official publication of the Polish Statistical Association. The first volume was published in 1938 and featured articles on statistical methods, demography and economic and social statistics, written by leading Polish statisticians, including Jan Czekanowski and Jerzy Neyman.
After the Second World War, in 1947, the Polish Statistical Association resumed its scientific and publishing activity. As a result, Przegląd Statystyczny was also reissued. In 1953, the Polish Statistical Association was dissolved and its assets were transferred to the Polish Economic Society and with it, the journal.
Between 1955 and 1973, Przegląd Statystyczny served as the official publication of the Statistics Section of the Polish Economic Society. From 1974 to 2017, it was published by the Committee on Statistics and Econometrics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk). In 2018, Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny) became the publisher of the journal, adding the English translation to its name: Przegląd Statystyczny. Statistical Review (PS), and since 2019, the journal features articles in English only, reinforcing its international character.
Over the years, pioneers of Polish statistics, econometrics and mathematical economics have published their research in PS. The journal has become one of the most important Polish scientific journals in the field of statistics and econometrics, playing a significant role in the development of these disciplines and in disseminating research results to both national and international audiences.
Through its long publishing tradition and the high scientific quality of the published articles, the journal has established a permanent position within the Polish and international statistical community.
The journal publishes original research papers covering theoretical and empirical topics in statistics, econometrics, mathematical economics, operational research, decision sciences, and data analysis. The journal also publishes review papers, reviews of important scientific monographs, reports on major scientific conferences, In memoriam articles, serving the purpose of promoting Polish science and scientists worldwide.
All issues of PS from 1954 onwards are available in the collections of the National Library of Poland and the main public university libraries in Poland, which also contributes significantly to the wide dissemination of the scientific achievements of Polish statistics.
An important element of the journal’s activity is the dissemination of research results presented at national and international scientific conferences in statistics, econometrics and related fields. Reports from major scientific meetings are published in the journal, which contributes to the integration of the research community and supports the development of scientific collaboration between Polish and international research communities.
Przegląd Statystyczny. Statistical Review also plays an important role in documenting the achievements of the Polish school of statistics and econometrics. The journal publishes biographical notes and In memoriam articles devoted to outstanding Polish statisticians and mathematicians whose work has left a lasting impact on the development of statistics and econometrics. These publications also help preserve the memory of the scientific achievements of distinguished scholars and contribute to maintaining the traditions and culture of Polish science.
In recent years, the journal has published articles presenting the profiles of such outstanding Polish scholars as Czesław Domański, Józef Hozer, Krzysztof Jajuga and Władysław Milo, as well as In memoriam articles dedicated to Andrzej Stanisław Barczak, Stanisława Bartosiewicz, Maria Cieślak, Zbigniew Czerwiński, Marek Fisz, Zdzisław Hellwig, Michał Kolupa, Stanisław Marian Kołodziejczyk, Wacław Kozakiewicz, Roman Kulczycki, Andrzej Malawski, Zbigniew Pawłowski, Maria Podgórska, Jerzy Spława-Neyman, Marcin Ulam, Władysław Welfe, Kazimierz Zając, Zofia Zarzycka, Zygmunt Zieliński.

This reflects the growing internationalisation of the journal and its increasing presence in the international circulation of scientific knowledge as well as its role in fostering international scientific collaboration.
